The EFF Calls On HP To Remove DRM From Its Printers

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has asked HP to restore the client's ability to use third-party ink jet cartridges in their office printers. It also urges consumers to sign a petition, that the publication of this message with about 7,500 signatures.

In an open letter to the President and CEO Inc. HP, Dion Weisler, activist Cory Doctorow urges the company to take five measures, including an apology to its customers and the original feature immediately use their printers . HP apparently active knowingly DRM printer ink under the guise of a security update, eliminating the characteristics of printers and violating the trust of its customers.

HP last week pushed an update to its line of desktop printers Jet. It was called a security update. However, after installation, users quickly discovered that the printer does not work with third parties or recycled ink cartridges - only new HP cartridges worked.

Doctorow points out in his letter to the CEO of HP, removing the ability is a tactical decoy. HP has publicly announced an update of the software would be implemented that would limit the use of the print cartridge. HP made the announcement in March, but the update was not pushed until September. HP knew at least six months customers buy a printer that eventually no longer support an important feature - compatibility with third party cartridges.

After releasing the upgrade, HP released a statement saying that the purpose of this update was to protect the innovations of the business and intellectual property.
